The heavy thump of the nail being driven through the wrists of the slave was only interrupted by his moan's of agony and cries for mercy. The men drilling the heavy nails through flesh gave him none. It had been three days since the massacre at the House of Batiatus and Capua continued to be in an uproar, and the repercussions were already being felt across the area. Soon the Legatus believed the rebellion would engulf all of Italy if he did not take steps to quell it immediately. The first cross went up, followed by a second, a third..and the line of screaming men and women continued. The horror was all watched by the impassive Legatus Claudius Glaber. A cold smile sliding over those handsome features.
'' Centurion Gracchus. Read the judgement. '' The Legatus barked, the judgement was rather obvious but he would like to reaffirm to the slaves that they would die here..and it would take days.
'' You have been sentenced to death for the crimes of murder, theft, plunder, rape, and disobeying the orders of your rightful masters. '' The Centurion said, not making eye contact with the screaming men and women. This group of slaves inspired by Spartacus had risen up in a villa not far from Capua. They had killed the Overseer, the master, raped his wife, and plundered his estate. Glaber's troops had caught them not too far from the scene of the massacre. Over sixty five slaves had been captured and more than twenty slaughtered outright. The slaves had to be reminded of the power of the Roman state. This would serve as a fitting example to any whom chose to follow Spartacus.
'' Does the judgement for the children still stand Legatus? '' Gracchus murmured. Men and women hadn't been the only thing's captured. Over a dozen children as well.
'' Did I say it did not soldier? '' Glaber snarled. '' If you are incapable of following orders, then fall on your sword now. I will not suffer insubordination amongst my men. Crucify them. ''
'' Of..of course not sir! '' The Centurion said in reply, standing to rigid attention. '' It will be done as you have ordered. '' The Legatus gave a firm nod, mounting his horse. He looked every inch the Roman soldier from that blood red cloak that hung from those shoulders to the cool aristocratic gaze.
'' We have received orders from Rome. I am to take three cohorts to Capua and take command of the militia. Tell the Tribune to prepare gather the rest of the Legion, wait for my command to move on Capua. '' Against his advice, the Consul had thought that ordering a full Legion to capture a small band of 'Gladiators' was a mistake with the army stretched so thin at this point. Glaber however was keenly aware that the revolt could spark further uprisings and bolster the manpower that Spartacus could draw upon. Whether he had a full Legion at his disposal or not, Glaber was going to kill Spartacus and have him executed as a common slave. Much like these wretch's.
'' On me. '' The flanks of the horse were kicked, the Legatus and his bodyguards moving towards the front of a gathering column of Roman soldiers as they marched to Capua.
